My work explores the different ways emotions can be expressed and uses inanimate vessels to carry out the job of representing and communicating different forms of expression. To me expressions are our universal language that connects us to one another on an intimate level without having to say a word.
I was diagnosed with severe Dyslexia from a young age,and have always naturally been drawn to expressing myself through visual terms. I fell in love with the malleable material of clay and quickly became immersed into the craft. I start my process by wheel throwing the form of a piece, and then incorporate sculptural elements to start creating a face. Each eyeball, nose, and mouth are carefully constructed and designed to create an emotion. My goal is to bring artful functional ware that speaks for itself without having to say a word.
Ariella Szemkus was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Fl. She moved to the Great Smokey Mountains in 2014. It was in North Carolina that she discovered her passion for handmade craft and love for clay. Ariella holds a AAS in Professional Crafts Clay, from Haywood College and graduated in the Spring of 2021. Her work focuses on exploring her fascination with how expression can be communicated, and working the the material of clay to create functional forms and bring them to life.
